Journal Entry 2
Wow. Hearing how Eratosthenes finds
the circumference of the Earth just by reading the letter which describes of
looking down the well and seeing the shadow and the moon from a straight line,
and relating that with the stick stuck in 500 miles away, astounds me. That is
incredible! Fizeau calculating the speed of light by using a toothed wheel and
spinning it, sounds unbelievably creative. Honestly, whenever I hear scientific
concepts and how it was discovered, I always thought of those scientists and
discovers as inhumanely creative and smart. Instead of getting inspired, I felt
ashamed and discouraged that I cannot be like them and don’t have enough
creativity in me to do those things.
Listening to Adam Savage helped me
to change this way of approach and get inspired to work harder. Adam Savage
makes it clear that science is not limited to anyone, as he says, “They are not
so different from us. We are all bags of meat and water. We all start with the
same tools.” I think the only difference between Eratosthenes and I is that I
live in a world that is more technologically advanced. Things that seemed
impossible at his time is now defined and recorded. Therefore, I have more
advantage of finding new discoveries. I also strongly believe that science
should not be limited to the exclusive people in this planet—it should be
available to everyone and anyone! Everyone in this planet is capable of
discovering scientific questions. Imagine what it would be like if 7.6 billion
people work to discover scientific concepts and questions.
